So this is finally it. My first very own blog. After having spent most of the day signing up to, browsing around and getting lost in and being rather disappointed by various social networks I have now decided that this shall be my chosen vehicle to share whatever my brain produces with the rest of the world.
But is Web 2.0 a 21st century necessity for social interaction? Do I need it to construct my own identity online? And excactly how many social network accounts does it need to be fully engaged with the rest of the world in every possible way?
First, there was StudiVz - the German version of Facebook for students. I joined, befriended all my real friends and some other people I normally wouldn't talk to. I also started joining every group to which I could remotely relate to, sometimes just because I thought the group name would be an entertaining line to have it displayed on my profile. But did I ever join any discussions? Except for some in a very selected amount of groups - not really. Instead I was asked to 'Rate the Person before me' or tell them what 'I would do with them'. No thank you.
Just as the hype and joy about StudiVz, new friend requests and wallposts was about to decrease...
... there came Facebook. Being invited by my friends from Canada, I discovered a whole new world, that had not been available for me on StudiVz - Facebook applications!
Oh what a wonderful thing, I raced cars, found out that my Disney princess is The Little Mermaid, that I'm like Ted Bundy and Fidel Castro and that the city I belong in is London. How fortunate that I already live here, I thought. And what would I have done without this life-changing information? I am still not sure.
Then I learned about Social Media Marketing. Facinating, especially when combined with Viral Marketing. What a great idea to have social network users spread your advertising for you and for free. In order to further increase my knowledge on the subject, of course, I had to find out more about other social networks. Which let to my online adventure today.
The result of which is, that I now can not only 'Poke my Friends', 'Freunde gruscheln' but also share 140 character long thoughts with other twitterers, Poster myself on Glogster and join an infinite amount of Ning networks.
And, of course, blog.
